Blues work hard to preserve unbeaten start to New Year
Calver equaliser in muddy battle

Neil Calver's eighth goal of the season earned Leiston a deserved point at a sticky Victory Road. On a surface only deemed playable at midday, Leiston bossed for long spells but were made to come from behind to preserve their unbeaten start to the year. Manager Carl Chenery kept the same line up that had beaten Newmarket the previous week with Cunningham on the bench following suspension. Brothers had the first effort of the game, volleying over from a tight angle before Norfolk had a clear sight of goal but under pressure from Boardley he could only fire straight at Stannard. Church then denied Brothers from close in before on 33 minutes, Stannard made two fine saves, first to deny Norfolk's header  from Clarke’s cross then from the rebound, a stunning block to deny Sam New son from inside the six yard box. The home side then lost leading scorer McGlone to a back injury before Church saved well from Boardley's free kick. Church then excelled just before the break to keep out Brothers with his right foot after being released by Boardley. After an even start to the second half Stanway took the lead with a soft goal just after the hour when Ben Newson's cross from the left was spooned-up off the line by Wardley with Callender simply nodding in from a yard for his first league goal since October. Moments after Stannard produced another superb save to deny a towering Hughes header from Coleman’s right wing cross from point blank range. After sustained pressure the home side deservedly drew level on 74 minutes when Church flapped at Boardley's corner allowing Calver to fire home from close in. The introduction of Williams and Hart seconds later brought renewed vigour with Church denying Williams three minutes later. A fine run by Hart ended with a clever reverse pass for Williams that was just centimetres too far in front of him and in stoppage time Church made a flying save to keep out the lively Brothers cross-cum-shot. In heavy conditions both sides should be commended for producing excellent entertainment. Whilst a point does little to challenge the front two, it does preserve the ten point cushion over fourth placed Rovers.
